Leash Manners, What You NEED to know about walking your Cairn

REWARD ATTENTION, start by saying your Cairns name and holding a treat by your face. When your dog/puppy makes eye contact say "Yes" or "Good" this will be our marker for a behavior we are looking for and immediately give them the treat. Think of the word you are using as marking the behavior, it should be immediate when the desired behavior is given.

NEXT. WE DO NOT FOLLOW OUR DOGS ON THE LEASH, THEY FOLLOW US. If you are potty training a young puppy and find they are too distracted/ playing with the leash etc. set up a designated puppy pen for potty time and only leash train when you are having your dog engage with you. If you follow your Cairn Terrier around on a leash you are setting the stage of them being the leader in your relationship. We need our dogs to look to us for leadership.

NO STRETCHY LEASHES. A short flat leash, martingale collar, or slip lead is most appropriate. Allowing your cairn to lean forward in a harness and pull on you develops their musculature improperly and could lead to imbalances that effect them for life. A leash really does not need to be longer than 6' as the dog, and a long line may be appropriate for working on recall exercises etc.

Keep some high reward treats in your pocket or pouch and reward desired behavior throughout your walk. Make it count, if your dog knows you are a treat dispenser for every little thing they will not seek reward because they know treats are coming regardless. Keep sessions very short with puppies (around 5-10 minutes of highly engaged work) Happy training Terrier Friends!!
