Health Testing at Northwest Cairn Terriers

Comprehensive Health Screenings & DNA Testing

We take health seriously. Every breeding dog in our program completes a combination of genetic testing, OFA evaluations, and veterinary exams, depending on their age and the recommendations for Cairn Terriers.

Because each dog’s completed tests may differ based on age, timing, or recommendations, the testing for every parent is listed on their individual profile.
Just click the sire or dam name on a puppy’s listing to view their results.

OFA Transparency

Many structural and eye screenings are completed through the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA).

OFA results are publicly searchable, so you can independently confirm any dog’s testing by visiting ofa.org and entering the registered name of the dog.

(Preliminary tests taken prior to one year of age are not publicly viewable, we update all prelim tests when a OFA clinic near us is available, dogs that have only received preliminary tests have hard copies available to share upon request)

You can see an example of an OFA CHIC certification below:

"Leilani,

The puppies, Molly and Piper are just wonderful!  So sweet, confident and inquisitive.  Smart as a whip and I love it.  One of them wakes up half way through the night so we go outside for a quick potty break and then they go right back to sleep, no whimpering.  Amazing.  They are crated together at night and I made sure to get a crate large enough they can both stretch out as well as curl up with each other.

Puppies bring such joy and the elderly neighbors are glowing with pleasure when the puppies are out in the backyard.  The puppies usually end up going for a visit for a few minutes.  The neighbors smile and chuckle when those two little puppies sit their bottom right down so they can have a training treat.
