Bland diets can be recommended by veterinarians for various reasons for our dogs, but what's important to note is it's meant to be temporary. I've felt loss first hand as the result of a dog being fed a "bland diet" during pregnancy (not approved by me). A bland diet is not a complete diet and can result in dire consequences. One popular combination is boiled chicken and rice, which is gentler on the stomach and easier to digest. While this diet has its merits, it's crucial to understand why bland diets should be viewed as short-term solutions rather than long-term fixes. In this blog post, we'll delve into the reasons behind the short-term nature of bland diets for dogs.
1. Limited Nutritional Diversity:
A bland diet like chicken and rice lacks the diverse range of nutrients that dogs need for optimal health. While it provides a temporary respite for a sensitive digestive system, it doesn't offer the complete and balanced nutrition required for long-term well-being. Essential vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients found in commercial dog food play a vital role in a dog's overall health.
2. Inadequate Protein Variety:

It's not uncommon for dogs to occasionally exhibit a reduced appetite, and in many cases, it's perfectly normal. Like humans, dogs may experience fluctuations in their appetite influenced by factors such as stress, changes in routine, or mild illness. Biologically, intermittent fasting, where a dog voluntarily abstains from eating for a short period, is a natural behavior rooted in their evolutionary history as scavengers and hunters. During these periods, a dog's body can focus on cellular repair and detoxification. However, it's important to monitor any prolonged loss of appetite, as it could be a sign of underlying health issues. It is not uncommon for our Cairn Terriers to have a lack of appetite at times. Remember the breed was developed to be "easy keepers" and they are very efficient processors of nutrients. Our needs are not their needs, please don't overfeed your Cairn, or fill them up on treats or unbalanced diets simply because you feel they need to eat more.
